Recently DRUM caught up with Bafana Mlungisi Mathe a South African actor best known for his role as Emkay in the SABC1 youth drama series turned soap opera Skeem Saam, telling us about his new singles and shares his plans for 2017.
“It’s a shock to many people, well to me it’s not a shock maskandi [a kind of Zulu folk music that is evolving with South African society is my thing] is my thing I grew up in Nquthu with grandmother, siblings and cousins so we were singing Maskandi, dancing to music of people like bab’Hhashi Elimhlophe, Bhekumuzi Luthuli, Phuzekhemisi to mention the few,” Mlungisi reveals.
“The single is called “Badumile” talking about a girlfriend who left her boyfriend to Johannesburg and saw celebrities and stylish people then stated to date them, the single is almost done and it will be out latest will be Friday” he said. Mlungisi’s music name will be Skandi Kid. The star says the name won’t limit him to maskandi only but he will also make hip hop as well as other genres.
“We meet at the studio with Mthandeni (Igcokama Elisha) Msomi, he is the easy person to get along with, he is still young, when we start doing this featured single I was like ‘You know what to me it’s about the arts.’ and I decided to work with him as he is also climbing his waves in the maskandi industry,” Mlungisi said.
“My plans this year is to continue with maskandi, work on TV and more stage plays like the one I did last year titled Finding Melo though I don’t want to plan a lot because God has greater plans for me ’when you plan God laughs’. We will still see Emkay as naughty as he is still more to come and to be shocked for coming from Emkay.
